Content	Exceeds Proficiency First sentence is clear topic sentence stating the theme of the book. Paragraph is at least 12 sentences long.	Meets Proficiency First sentence is clear topic sentence stating a theme of the book. Paragraph is 9-11 sentences long.	Partially Meets Proficiency The first sentence is not completely a clear topic sentence, and/or the theme is not presented as a statement. Paragraph is only 8 sentences long.	Does Not Meet Proficiency The first sentence is not a clear topic sentence, and/or the theme is not stated. Paragraph is 7 or fewer sentences long.
Organization	Exceeds Proficiency All points in paragraph relate to topic sentence (theme statement).	Meets Proficiency Most points in paragraph relate to the topic sentence (theme statement).	Partially Meets Proficiency Several points are off topic and/or unclear and not related to the topic sentence (theme statement).	Does Not Meet Proficiency Paragraph is disorganized with unclear support or non-existent support for the topic sentence (theme statement).
Support	Exceeds Proficiency Paragraph has four or more complete supporting detail sentences. They relate back to the main idea. All statements are accurate.	Meets Proficiency Paragraph has three or more complete supporting detail sentences. They relate back to the main idea. Some statements are inaccurate.
