The essay does not give background information nor does it adequately explain/describe the topic. There is no reflective style/tone in the conclusion.

The essay may not give complete background information, or it may not adequately explain/describe the topic.
There is some apparent reflective style/tone, but it not sufficient.
Good

The essay gives adequate background for the topic and explains/describes it sufficiently. It also concludes with a reflective style/tone with what the student learned from completing the assignment.
Excellent

The essay gives good background and explains/describes the topic in exceptional detail. It also concludes with a reflective style/tone in which the student relates what he or she learned from completing this assignment.
