This writing rubric is used in a 3rd grade class. This rubric is used to assess students' responses to test items questions requiring a short answer response. This writing rubric is used in all academic subjects.

Each sentence is well organized with a topic sentence, to explain answer and a concluding sentence. At least 5-8 sentences in the body. Stayed on topic
Good

Essay is organized.

Have topic sentence and concluding sentence, but is missing some information in the body for explanation.

Fair

Essay has some organization.

Missing some information in the topic sentence or concluding sentence.

Limited on explanation. Weak on topic
Needs Improvement

Essay is weak on organization. Response is present but weak.

Staying on topic is weak.
Content

Presence of developed ideas is demonstrated through examples, anecdotes, opinions or explanations.

Excellent

Sentences have great word choice. Substantial content demonstrating strong development and sophisticated ideas.
Good

Has some details, and the language is descriptive.

Some facts or evidence are given.

Knowledge is applied.
Fair

Some details or evidence are given, but uses “flat” language. Explanation is given but very few facts and knowledge are used in sentences. Evidence doesn't completely support response.
Needs Improvement

Limited on explanation. Some details or evidence are given. Sentence structure is incoherent and no explanation is offered.
Grammar

Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization are used.

Excellent

No errors occur in spelling, no run ons, or punctuation errors.
Good

1-2 errors occur in spelling, grammar, or punctuation, but they do not affect the overall response.
Fair

Some errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation interfere with the overall response.
