Essay has a confused or unclear structure; it may entirely lack an appropriate introduction, conclusion, or paragraphing.

Essay exhibits problems such as a poorly-placed or missing thesis, statement of organization, or conclusion; one or two sentence paragraphs; lack of transitions; etc.

Essay has minor problems such as a weak statement of organization or transitions, disorganized or poorly-developed paragraphs, a sketchy conclusion, etc.

Essay has an introduction with a well-placed thesis and statement of organization, well-developed and logically-ordered paragraphs with clear transitions, and a conclusion.

Sources are typically either not cited or miscited, or research requirements are not met.

Requirements may be only marginally met, or citations and bibliography show many errors in documentation format.

Requirements met but citations and bibliography have minor lapses such as incorrect bib. order, punctuation errors in in-text citations, etc.

Citations and bibliography use appropriate APA, MLA, or other conventions, and research requirements met.

Sentences show repeated serious errors such as fragments, run-ons, comma splices, fused sentences, etc.

Sentences tend to either show some serious errors in structure or lack complexity.

Sentences are complete and coherent, but minor errors or lack of variety in structure appears.

Each thought is conveyed in a complete, well-structured sentence, and the essay demonstrates sentence variety.
