Ideas	Excellent Interesting, specific details are used to "show" what is going on in the story. Details help the reader visualize the action in the story.	Good Specific details are used to tell the story. One or two may help the reader visualize the story, but mostly the reader must read between the lines.	Working Some details, but mostly you just give brief action without much detail.	Poor Details are missing. The story is not expanded on in any way.
Organization	Excellent The piece begins with a hook or a lead that captures the reader's attention. The middle is logical and the end is appropriate and clear. Strong story transition words support the flow of the writing	Good The beginning, middle and end are obvious and easy to follow. They appear in a logical order and include the use of story transition words.	Working The beginning, middle and end are harder to identify and one or more may be missing. Some missing and/or boring transition words.	Poor The writing is unclear so that finding the beginning, middle and/or end is challenging. No transition words.
Conventions	Excellent No errors or very few errors (0-4) in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling exist.	Good A few errors (5-9) in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling exist but piece is easy to read.	Working Enough errors(10-15) in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling exist that reading the piece requires effort.	Poor Enough errors (16 or more) in grammar, punctuation and/or spelling exist that reading the piece is very difficult or impossible.
Word Choice	Excellent Words are carefully chosen to include specific nouns, strong action-packed verbs, and uncommon adjectives and adverbs create vivid pictures and express clear feelings.	Good Some words are carefully chosen while others seem ordinary. A clear picture is created.	Working Words are ordinary and lack creativeness. Creating a mental image from the words is difficult to do.	Poor Lacking expressive language. Some ordinary words are used but even those are limited.
