The purpose of this rubric is to allow the younger student to know what the expectations are for writing a comparing/contrasting essay. The student will compare and contrast the book The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and Walt Disney's The Jungle Book. In preparation for this assignment, the student will have had instruction in the writing process, sentence structure, capitalization, end marks, read the book and viewed the movie. Students will also have had instruction using technology i.e., word processing. This can also be used for older students who lack the appropriate skills to write this type of essay.

The student has included a list of the characters, and a complete description of the characters. Each play has lines after a character's name. The play has stage directions and setting descriptions in appropriate places.
Good - 3

The student has listed the characters, but has not fully described each of the characters. There are lines after each character's name. The play may include descriptions of the setting and stage directions, but they may not be in the appropriate places.
Fair - 2

The student has listed the characters, but has decided not to describe them. There are lines after most characters' names. Setting and stage directions are haphazardly placed.
Poor - 1

The characters appear in the play, but there is not a formal list of the characters seperate from their lines. Lines sometimes exist after a character's name, but the setting and stage directions do not seem to serve a purpose even if present.
Development

Excellent - 4

Student has fully developed his or her characters, setting and stage directions. The act includes fifty lines.
Good - 3

Student has developed his or her characters, setting and stage directions. The act includes fifty lines.
Fair - 2

Student has some development with his or her characters, setting and stage directions. The act includes fourty or more lines.
Poor - 1

Student has little development with his or her characters, setting and stage directions. The act includes less than fourty lines.
Problem or action

Excellent - 4

Student has fully explored a problem or action. The play is not filled with actions that are without motives. There is a problem or dillema in the play.
Good - 3

Student has explored a problem or action. The play has an action that is without a motive, but the overall problem or dillema still exists.
Fair - 2

Student touches upon a problem or action. The play includes some actions that are without motives.
Poor - 1

Student has not explored a problem or action or the play is filled with actions that are without motives.
