Sequence clue words Uses words such as beginning, middle and end of the story.	Novice The student did not use any of the sequencing words.	Nearing Proficiency The student used a few of the sequencing clue words.	Proficient All sequencing clue words were used by the student in a logical order.
Pictures The student will illustrate three events from the story showing the beginning, middle and end of the story.	Novice The student did not draw any events from the story in order.	Nearing Proficiency The student drew at least two events from the story in order.	Proficient The student drew all three events from the story in the correct order.
Oral Retell The student will visualize the story and tell a partner the beginning, middle and end of the story orally.	Novice The student was unable to visualize and orally retell events of the story in order.	Nearing Proficiency The student was able to visualize and orally retell some events of the story in order.	Proficient The student was able to visualize and orally retell the beginning, middle and end of the story in order.
