Theory	Inadequate Fails to identify the theory or theories used.	Minimal Names a theory but provides no further information OR information is misleading or inaccurate.	Adequate Names a theory and summarizes relevant aspects accurately.	Excellent Names a theory, provides an accurate, relevant summary, and specifies a concept or relationship in the theory to be used in the paper.
Example	Inadequate No example provided.	Minimal Provides an example unrelated to the theory.	Adequate Provides an example but without specifics.	Excellent Provides a personal example specific to the theory with some relevant detail.
Conclusion and Reasoning	Inadequate Minimal or no conclusion; conclusion is not supported by the evidence.	Minimal Conclusion could be valid but not clearly related to the premises.	Adequate Valid conclusion, limited reference to premises.	Excellent Valid conclusion with demonstrated clear reference to premises.
Development	Inadequate Paragraphs do not conform to the assignment.	Minimal Paragraphs conform to the assignment but are not linked logically.	Adequate Paragraphs are linked logically but read as though each is a "stand alone" - lack of transition between paragraphs interrupts flow of argument.	Excellent Paragraphs are linked logically and stylistically.
Quality of argument	Inadequate Argument is invalid.	Minimal Argument is poorly supported (see, for example, Weston, Chapters 1 & 4) throughout.	Adequate Argument is poorly supported in one premise.	Excellent Argument is well-supported throughout.
Mechanics	Inadequate More than 3 or more errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, or APA. Note that one APA citation may contain more than one error.	Minimal 2 errors.	Adequate 1 error.	Excellent No errors.
