Stir Stick Bridge Building
Bridge to be made out of wooden stir sticks, dental floss and white glue. Width of bridge deck must be a minimum of 130 mm. The bridge must have a span of exactly 700 mm. The deck surface must be a minimum length of 800 mm and no more than 1000 mm. The total overall bridge height must not exceed 300 mm and a maximum of 150 mm below the deck. The bridge must be able withstand a maximum of 5 kilograms of weight without failing or sagging more than 5 cm.

Structure

1.4.2 Investigate and analyze forces within structures, and forces applied to them

Level 1

Basic beam bridge (no real design)
Does not span a gap of 700 millimeters. (unstable or incomplete)
Width is not at least 300 millimeters.
Measurements way off.
Did not maximize use of materials
Level 2

Beam or arch bridge with limited creative design (e.g. no trusses used)
Spans a gap of 700 millimeters, but remains unstable or incomplete in some way)
Width is at least 300 millimeters
Measurements off.
Limited use of materials.
Level 3

Beam or arch bridge designed with good creativity
Spans a gap of 700 millimeters, is complete and stable
Width is at least 300 millimeters
Measurements may be off a little.
Good use of materials
Level 4

Arch bridge designed with excellent creativity
Spans a gap of 700 Millimeters is complete and stable
Width is at least 300 millimeters
All measurements match.
Excellent use of materials
Appearance

1.4.3 Investigate and analyze the properties of materials used in structures

Level 1

Not aesthetically pleasing (shapes, patterns, colour, etc.)
Work is sloppy throughout
Design is unattractive and/or plain.
Level 2

Limited aesthetics
(shapes, patterns, colour, etc.)
Design and use of glue is messy at times.
Some visual appeal
glue use..messy
Level 3

Overall, an attractive bridge (shapes, patterns, colour, etc.)
Tidy work most of the time
Visually appealing
Level 4

Extremely aesthetic in design (shapes, patterns, colour, etc.)
All construction is clean and attractive.
Visually appealing
Weight Held

1.4.3 Investigate and analyze the properties of materials used in structures

Level 1

Failed with very little weight.
Level 2

Failed with little weight.
Level 3

Sagged more than 5 cm with plenty of weight but bridge did not fail.
Level 4

Did not sag nor fail with excessive weight.

reflection
1.4.4 Demonstrate and describe processes used in developing, evaluating and improving structures that will meet human needs with a margin of safety

Level 1

Bridge design does not match the design of the blueprint and changes were not explained.
Level 2

Bridge design somewhat matches the design of the blueprint.
If any changes were made during building, they were explained a little upon reflection.
Level 3

Bridge blueprint mostly matches the design of the finished product.
If any changes were made during building, they were sufficiently explained upon reflection.
Level 4

Bridge blueprint matches the design of the finished product.
If any changes were made during building, they were thoroughly explained upon reflection.
Teamwork

2.4 Work collaboratively on problems; and use appropriate language and formats to communicate ideas, procedures and results

Level 1

Partners ..no team work.. one person ran the show!
No respect shown.
Level 2

Partners ..some team work
Some respect shown.
Level 3

Partners were working together, but some were distracted from their project.
Respect was observed at times.
Level 4

Each person was actively involved in the building process. All partners were treated with respect.
