Topic sentence/introduction	Poor The writer did not have a good beginning or topic sentence in the story.	Fair The topic sentence or beginning of the story was weak.	Good The writer included a topic sentence that was fair for the story.	Excellent The writer introduced his story well by using a well planned introduction or a topic sentence.
