Excellent

The student demonstrated outstanding preparation with notes on a primary source, contributed substantially and worked well with the rest of the group.
Good

The student was prepared with notes and contibuted substantially.
Fair

The student had few or no notes and was inadequately prepared. The student did not participate much to the debate.
Poor

The student did not have notes and did not cooperate at all.
Language mechanics

Use of the language studied in class (or not), range of vocabulary, communication skills, phonology

Excellent

The student speaks clearly and distinctly all the time, their utterances are grammatically correct, there are no mispronunciations.
Good

The student speaks clearly and distinctly all the time. The student has few linguistic errors, but sometimes
mispronounces words.
Fair

The student speaks clearly and distinctly most of the time. There are still significant language problems and/or mispronunciations.
Poor

The student's intervention contained numerous llinguistic errors and/or
mispronounciations of words. The student often mumbles or cannot be
understood. The student utters incomplete sentences.
Arguments/Organization

Logical reasons and/or examples and factual evidence are given to support reasons or arguments. Viewpoints and responses are outlined both clearly and orderly.

Excellent

The student presented several relevant arguments supported by strong evidence. The organization and presentation of arguments were very clear.
Good

The student presented some main arguments with some evidence and examples in organized and clear statements.
Fair

Some relevant examples/facts are given. The student presented arguments, in a somewhat unclear fashion.
Poor

Few or no relevant supporting examples/facts. The student was disorganized and confused.
Rebuttal/Use of Cross Examination

Questions asked relate to what was previously stated by opponent.
Answers given are direct. Arguments made by the other side are responded to and dealt with effectively.

Excellent

While showing respect for the opposing side, the student made strong arguments directly in response to the statements of the opposing side. Pretty much all of the questions asked were relevant and advanced the asker's cause.
Answers that were given were direct and advanced the responder's cause.
Good

The student respectfully offered some arguments directly in response to the statements of the opposing side. Most questions asked were relevant to what was said before.
Most answers were direct and to the point.
Fair

The student offered a response to the opposing side with a measure of respect. Some questions are relevant, others not.
Answers are ok, but perhaps not as direct as could be.
Poor

The student had no response to the opposing side's arguments and/or showed little or no respect for the opposing side. No questions are asked, or questions that are asked are unrelated to previous argument.
Answers given, if any, are not direct and to the point.
