Comprehension "I understand what I read."	1 Needs frequent prompting to check for understanding. Retells some information with frequent prompting.	2 Beginning to check for understanding. Retells information with some prompting, but events may not be in sequential order.	3 Checks for understanding before, during, and after reading. Retells most important information.	4 Makes connections automatically. Summarizes concisely and accurately. Uses a variety of comprehension strategies unaided.
Accuracy "I can read the words."	1 Does not self-correct; accepts nonsense. Needs frequent prompting to use a strategy.	2 Self-corrects some errors. Relies on 1-2 strategies heavily. Needs reteaching to try other strategies.	3 Self-corrects most errors. Errors rarely affect meaning. Uses strategies when prompted.	4 Self-corrects all errors quickly and independently. Uses a variety of strategies unaided.
Fluency "I can read accurately, with expression, and understand what I read."	1 Reads word for word or very choppy. Reads slowly.	2 Begins to adjust reading rate.
