Reading Response Journal Rubric 
Utilize to grade reading response journals when students write a personal response to a prompt given by the teacher. These journals are often used with a novel.

The prompt is answered somewhat by the student completing two of the following three: answer to the question, an example from their personal life, and connection to the story. Students may have also been vague in their answer.
Good

The prompt is responded to fully by students answering the question, giving an example from their personal life, and connecting to the story. Details are shared to make the reader understand the ideas the student is trying to get across.
Format

Poor

The journal entry is not in paragraph format. Ideas are random.
Fair

The journal entry is an indented paragraph that is at least five sentences. Ideas are somewhat organized.
Good

The journal entry is an indented paragraph (or multiple paragraphs) that is at least seven sentences. Ideas are organized in a way that is easy to follow and understand.
Spelling/Grammar

Poor

The student made a poor attempt at correct spelling and grammar. More than 5 mistakes exist.
Fair

The student made some attempt at correct spelling, sentence structure, and grammar. 3-5 mistakes exist.
Good

It is obvious that the student made a strong attempt to spell correctly and use proper sentence structuer and grammer. Only 2-3 mistakes exist.
