This section grades on the how the writing is organized.

I didn't understand what you were writing about. Your central idea is missing, unclear, or illogical. You did not maintain focus and included extraneous information. You shifted from idea to idea. You did not stay on topic through out your story.
Fair

You had little knowledge about the concept, and a few key pieces were missing from the writing. You got off topic, but managed to get back on topic to keep your paper organized.
Good

You had a good understanding of the concept you were writing about, but there were a few areas that needed to be elaborated. The essay is clear and related to the central idea. You got a little off topic, but it didn't hurt the organization of your paper.
Excellent

Great understanding of the concept. As I read your paper you really know how to articulate your knowledge through writing. Great ideas that focused on the central idea.You stayed on topic throughout your entire paper.
Progression

This section grades on how the flow of your story.

Poor

The progression is weak. There was a lot of repetition or wordiness that causes disruptions throughout the composition.
Fair

The progression is not always logical and controlled. Sometimes repetition and wordiness cause minor disruptions in the flow of the composition.
Good

Idea is generally logical and controlled. For the most part, transitions are meaningful and sentence to sentence connections are sufficient to the flow of the composition.

Ideas are logical and well controlled. There were meaningful transitions and connections that made the flow of your story easy to follow.
Development of ideas

How well did you develop your ideas in your composition?

Poor

Development of ideas are weak, inappropriate, vague, and insufficient to the story. The writer's response to the story is vague and confusing. The essay as a whole is only weakly linked to the prompt.
Fair

The development of the essay is minimal. There is little to now thoughtfulness. There is limited understanding of the prompt.
Good

The writer uses details and examples that are specific and appropriate and add substance to the composition.
Excellent

Ideas are effective, details and examples are specific and well chosen that add substance to the composition. Your experiences or view of the world help to add interesting ideas.
Sentence Structure

Sentence usage and development of sentences

Poor

Too many errors in grammar, usage, or sentence structure made it hard to read. Sentences are simplistic, awkward, and uncontrolled.
Fair

Sentences are awkward or only somewhat controlled, weakening the effectiveness of the essay. There were several areas that were hard to understand.

There were a few errors in the sentences. All of your sentences were complete and some were underdeveloped. Sentences are varied and controlled contributing to the effectiveness of the essay.

Length of Composition

An effective expository composition is expressed in a page.

Poor

Your composition only covers a fourth of the page. It is hard to get your story across in so little of amount of writing.
Fair

Your composition covers half of the page. Some ideas are apparent, but it is hard to get your complete story across in only half of the page.
Good

Your composition covered 3/4 of the page. There were a few unnecessary spaces throughout your story, but not all of the paper was utilized to get your point across.
Excellent

Neatness

What is the first impression of your writing? Did you take your time to produce an outstanding final draft or did you rush through it.
