This writing rubric is used in a 3rd grade class. This rubric is used to assess students' responses to test items questions requiring a short answer response. This writing rubric is used in all academic subjects.

Essay is weak on organization. Response is present but weak. <BR>

Fair

Essay have some organization.<BR>
Missing some information in the topic sentence or concluding sentence.<BR>
Limited on explanation. Weak on topic
Good

Essay is organized.<BR>
Have topic sentence and concluding sentence, but is missing some information in the body for explanation.<BR>

Excellent

Essay is organized.<BR>
Each sentence is well organized with a topic sentence, to explain answer and a concluding sentence. At least 5-8 sentences in the body. Stayed on topic
Explanation is well written

There is a topic sentence and supporting sentences. Response has supportive details or evidence, displays knowledge and facts to answer the questions.

Unacceptable

No details or facts are written. No written evidence of knowledge on topic.
Needs Improvement

Limited on explanation. Some details or evidence are given. Sentence structure is incoherent and no explanation is offered.
Fair

Some details or evidence are given, but uses “flat” language. Explanation is given but very few facts and knowledge are used in sentences. Evidence doesn't completely support response.
Good

Has some details, and the language is descriptive. <BR>
Some facts or evidence are given.<BR>
Knowledge is applied.
Excellent

Sentences have great word choice. Facts and knowledge and details or evidence are evident.
Grammar

Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization are used.
