Ideas

Above Grade Level

Interesting, specific details are used to "show" what is going on in the story. Details help the reader visualize the action in the story.
At Grade Level

Specific details are used to tell the story. One or two may help the reader visualize the story, but mostly the reader must read between the lines.

Some details, but mostly you just give brief action without much detail.
Far Below Grade Level

Details are missing. The story is not expanded on in any way.

The piece begins with a a setting and character description. The middle includes a defined problem and at least 3 events leading to the solution. The end is appropriate and clear. The problem is solved.

The beginning, middle and end are obvious and easy to follow. They appear in a logical order but still missing some components (character description, setting, problem, events, solutions).
Below Grade Level

The beginning, middle and end are harder to identify because more than 3 componets are missing.
Far Below Grade Level

The writing is unclear so that finding the beginning, middle and/or end is challenging.
