This writing rubric is used in a 3rd grade class. This rubric is used to assess students' responses to test items questions requiring a short answer response. This writing rubric is used in all academic subjects.

Short answer has 5-8 sentence response. For each question.

Zero sentences are written.
Poor

Only 1-2 sentences are written.
Fair

Only 3 sentences are written.
Good

Only 4 sentences are written.
Excellent

5-8 or more sentences are written.
Stayed on Topic

Each response is well organized. Response is answered correctly. Responses sentence structure is varied. Explanation is on topic

Unacceptable

Not organized.
Sentence structure is poor, with no explanation. Did not respond to topic.
Poor

Essay is weak on organization. Response is present but weak.
Staying on topic is weak.
Fair

Essay have some organization.
Missing some information in the topic sentence or concluding sentence.
Limited on explanation. Weak on topic
Good

Essay is organized.
Have topic sentence and concluding sentence, but is missing some information in the body for explanation.
Stayed on topic
Excellent

Essay is organized.
Each sentence is well organized with a topic sentence, to explain answer and a concluding sentence. At least 5-8 sentences in the body. Stayed on topic
Explanation is well written

There is a topic sentence and supporting sentences. Response has supportive details, displays knowledge and facts to answer the questions.

Unacceptable

No details or facts are written. No written evidence of knowledge on topic.
Poor

Limited on explanation. Some details given. Sentence structure is incoherent and no explanation is offer
Fair

Some details given, but uses “flat” language. Explanation is given but very few facts and knowledge is use in Sentences.
Good

Has some details, and the language is descriptive.
Some facts are given.
Knowledge is applied.
Excellent

Sentences have great word choice. Facts and knowledge and details are evident.
Grammar

Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization are used.

Unacceptable

Errors in all grammar conventions.
Poor

Numerous errors in all grammar conventions.
Fair

Some errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation interfere with the overall response.
Good

1-2 errors occur in spelling, grammar, or punctuation, but they do not affect the overall response.
Excellent

No errors occur in spelling, no run ons, or punctuation errors.
