Story events	Beginner The student did not describe enough of the important events from the story or gave too much information that wasn't important.	Intermediate The student told some of the story but did not include the most important events or included a few unimportant events.	Correct The student summarized the story using only the most important events.
Sequence	Beginner The student did not put the events in correct order. The summarization did not make sense.	Intermediate Some of the events are in the correct order. It was a little difficult to understand the story.	Correct The story was retold in an order that made sense. It was easy to understand the story.
Length	Beginner The student wrote too much and simply retold the story.	Intermediate The student shortened the story, and included most of the important ideas, but went over the length limit.	Correct The student included all of the important ideas and kept to the length limit.
Mechanics	Beginner The summary included many spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.	Intermediate Some of the summary was corrected for spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.	Correct The summary was corrected or had only a few errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.
Chart	Beginner The chart had some information but it was either incorrect or unimportant.	Intermediate The chart contained most of the important information with few mistakes.	Correct The chart was correct and contained all of the important information.
