Building Appropriate Peer Interactions
During opportunities for peer interaction the student will demonstrate the skills of, beginning a conversation, conversational turn-taking, engaging in age-appropriate conversation with a respectful voice, and ending the conversation in an expected fashion.

Appropriate Conversation Engagement (starting)
Poor
Student refuses to begin a conversation or does not respond to a peer's initial conversation starter.
Fair
Student responds to initial conversation starter with a verbal verbal response that stops the conversation immediately.
Good
Student responds to initial conversation starter with a verbal interaction that allows the conversation to continue for two minutes.
Excellent
Student responds to initial conversation starter with a verbal interaction that allows the conversation to continue for more than two minutes.
Conversational Turn Taking (give and take)
Poor
Student doe not take turns, forcing the conversation to end or dominates the conversation and does not allow the other person to speak/share.There is no flow to the conversation.
Fair
Student attempts to take conversational turns sporadically, at least one back and fourth. The flow of the conversation is short and restricted.
Good
Student takes conversational turns regularly, with at least 2-3 exchanges (back and fourth). The flow of the conversation may ebb and flow with varying levels of comfort.
Excellent
Student takes conversational turns regularly, with at least 4-6 exchanges (back and fourth). The flow of the conversation is natural and unrestricted.
Using a Respectful Voice
Poor
Student does not use a respectful voice:
extremely short with peers
frequently critical of peers
comments on peers short-comings
uses inappropriate language (frequent)
makes fun of peers
calls peers names
argues/fights with peers
conversation must end due to student's comments
Fair
Student does not use a respectful voice some of the conversation:
short with peers
critical of peers
comments on peers short-comings
uses inappropriate language (mild)
makes fun of peers
conversation may end short or the student may require several redirects to maintain respect.
Good
Student uses a respectful voice most of the time (no more than 2 redirects).
Excellent
Student always uses a respectful voice (no redirects, no more than 2 self-redirects and/or apologies).
Age-appropriate Conversation
Poor
Student stays on conversation topic 0-24% of the time. Student rarely acknowledges others' viewpoints while speaking and seems one-sided OR student does not engage in conversation.
Fair
Student stays on conversation topic 25-59% of the time. Student acknowledges others' viewpoints occasionally while speaking, but the conversation is mostly one-sided (student may change topic without warning) OR student does not engage in conversation for longer periods of time.
Good
Student stays on conversation topic 60-89% of the time. Student acknowledges others' viewpoints while speaking and there is a noticeable ebb and flow to the conversation. There may be short gaps in conversation.
Excellent
Student stays on conversation topic 90% of the time. Student actively acknowledges others' viewpoints while speaking and the conversation has a natural ebb and flow.
Appropriate Conversation Disengagement (ending)
Poor
Conversation/interaction is ended abruptly (or not started at all), without explanation.
Fair
Conversation/interaction is ended abruptly with a brief explanation.
Good
Conversation/interaction is ended appropriately with a brief explanation. Other peer(s) will feel like the conversation/interaction ended naturally.
Excellent
Conversation/interaction is ended appropriately and naturally after 6 or more verbal exchanges.
