Guided Reading in Book Club 
Students read and discuss a story in a book club. Students work on literacy skills such as learning about characters, main idea, and sequencing while learning vocabulary and working on comprehension.

Fluency is described as students reading with automaticity, grade level appropriate speed, and prosody.

Student "whisper reads" or reads aloud fluently. Pauses are only made at appropriate times, and voice changes based on punctuation and on the purpose of reading.

Student "whisper reads" or reads aloud somewhat fluently. Pauses are sometimes inappropriate and/or voice changes based on the purpose of reading is not always evident.

Student does not discuss the story with insightful answers and thoughts. It is clear that student does not comprehend the story based on their responses.
Literacy Strategies and Skills

Each week one aspect of reading comprehension is learned and reviewed. Students are responsible to learn this concept and show competency in it.

Good

Student clearly understands the objective of the literacy strategy that is presented in small groups by active participation and writing in their journal.
Fair

Student somewhat understands the objective of the literacy strategy that is presented in small groups. Student may not be active in small group discussion or does not show competency in writing in their journal.
Poor

Student does not understand the literacy strategy or skill that is being taught. Student does not participate in discussion and does not apply strategy in their journal writing.
