Main Idea	Effective Presents a clearly focused main idea.	Adequate Uses the assigned topic to establish a main idea.	Marginal Addresses the assigned topic, though the focus is unclear.	Below Marginal Attempts to address assigned topic but with little or no focus.	Inadequate Does not attempt to address assigned topic.
Organization	Effective Establishes a clear and logical organization. Paragraphs have a topic sentence with supporting details.	Adequate Writing has opening, body, and concluding paragraph. Paragraphs have a topic sentence with supporting details.	Marginal Shows some evidence of an organizational plan. Paragraphs have a topic sentence and supporting details.	Below Marginal Fails to organize ideas. Some paragraphs have a topic sentence with no supporting details.	Inadequate Contains no organization or ideas. Paragraphs have no topic sentence and/or supporting details.
