Beginning Level

A few wrong rhythm figures included minor continuous sections of imprecision. Did not detract from overall performance.

No rhythm errors, overall accurate performance.
Tempo

Beginning Level

Tempo fluctuates a lot. Frequent rushing and dragging.
Basic Level

Tempo is different from the printed tempo markings, resulting in inappropriate tempos.
Proficient Level

Tempo approaches the printed tempo markings, yet the performed tempo does not detract.
Advanced Level

Tempo is accurate and consistent with the printed tempo markings. Phrasing and articulation are approached in sensitivity to the tempo.

Consistent attention to dynamics demonstrated. Overall effect is musical. At times tone quality is distorted as dynamics change.

Consistent attention to dynamics demonstrated. The student's range of dynamics creates many levels of intensity, each appropriate for the music. Tone quality remains intact at all times.

Appropriate hand position and energy at all times. Posture is always appropriate; both feet on the floor, sitting up straight and arms up and ready. Plays with appropriate force and dynamic.

Hand position appropriate some of the time, energy is lacking at times. Posture appropriate some of the time; legs crossed, sitting back in chair some of the time. Plays too loudly or softly at times.
Proficient Level

3 Needs Improvent

Hand position sloppy, hands too far back on the edge of the drum.Shows no energy and poor posture. Drum is played too hard or too soft.

Student gives some effort to have correct posture but fails to maintain consistent good posture throughout the performance.
Proficient Level

Student attempts to have correct posture but creates tension in sound. Some inconsistencies in posture.
Advanced Level

Ideal posture demonstrated. Student is poised and demonstrates pride without having overly stiff posture.
Limbs

Beginning Level

3 Excellent

Student uses all four limbs to make rhythm.
Basic Level

2 Good

Student uses 3 limbs to make rhythm.
Proficient Level

3 Needs Improvent

Student uses only hands to make rhythm.
