Author's Purpose Explanation of an author’s purpose for using the genre to communicate his/her ideas.	Great! Author's purpose is explained with specific details and examples.	Good Author's purpose is explained with limited details and examples.	Fair Author's purpose is explained, but no details or examples are added.	Poor Author's purpose is not explained.
Characteristics Characteristics of the literary genre	Great! All of the characteristics of the genre are listed.	Good Most of the characteristics of the genre are listed.	Fair Some of the characteristics of the genre are listed.	Poor Only one or two of the characteristics of the genre are listed.
Examples with Explanation Examples of work written in the genre and an explanation of why the examples are characteristic of the genre.	Great! Two examples and a specific explanation of how they fit into the literary genre are included.	Good Two examples and a general explanation of how they fit into the literary genre are included.	Fair One example is included with explanation.	Poor One example is included, but there is no explanation of why it fits into the literary genre.
