Sentences contain detailed background infromation relevant to the topic	Proficient Writer provides only two supporting sentences OR only 2 out of the 3 sentences contain information relevant to the topic	Needs Improvement Writer provides only one supporting sentence OR only one sentence is relevant to the topic.
Thesis Statement	Advanced The thesis statement names the topic of the essay and outlines the main points to be discussed. The thesis provides a clear, strong opinion of the author's position on the topic.	Proficient The thesis statement names the topic of the essay. The thesis provides a clear opinion of the author's position on the topic.	Needs Improvement The thesis statement outlines some or all of the main points to be discussed but does not name the topic.
