Performance Assessment - Student Choice 
This is a performance assessment for music students selected to practice over the Holiday Break. The goal is to help students identify melodic ideas and to assess if they can play notes and rhythms on their own - without teacher assistance.

Very good posture. Sits up and off the back of chair with feet flat on the floor. Instrument position mostly correct.

Excellent posture. Sits up on edge of chair with feet flat on the floor. Instrument position is excellent.
Rhythm

Beginning

No obvious sense of pulse. Rhythms are incorrect. Needs individual attention.
Approaching

Inconsistent pulse. Many rhythms are incorrect.
Meeting

Basic sense of pulse. Some rhythms are incorrect.
Exceeding

Strong sense of pulse. All rhythms performed accurately.
Left Hand/ Intonation

Beginning

Poor left hand shape and/ or intonation. Needs individual attention.
Approaching

Some problems with left hand shape causing intonation issues.
Meeting

Mostly good left hand shape and very few intonation issues.
Exceeding

Excellent, relaxed left hand shape allowing for great intonation.
Note Accuracy

Beginning

Many note errors. Needs individual attention
Approaching

Some note accuracy. Numerous notes not fingered correctly.
Meeting

Good note accuracy. One or two notes not fingered correctly.
Exceeding

Excellent note accuracy. No note mistakes.
Tone/ Bow Technique

Beginning

Playing is tentative with a weak sound. Bow hold needs improvement. Needs individual attention.
Approaching

Playing is somewhat secure with a somewhat weak sound. Bow contact point is not consistent. Bow hold needs improvement.
Meeting

Playing is fairly confident with a somewhat strong sound. Bow is usually straight and on the contact point. Bow hold is mostly correct but may be slightly tight.
Exceeding

Playing is very confident with a strong sound. Bow is straight and on the contact point. Bow hold is correct and relaxed.
