Engages the reader 20 pts Creates reader interest by selecting a topic that is current and of interest to peer group.	Poor Opens with a reference to the topic which may not be of particular or appropriate interest; leaves out more than one of the lead questions; if an investigative report, does not answer Why or How.	Fair Opens with an introduction of the topic and includes at least three of the lead questions (Who, What, Where, and When); also includes the Why and How if an investigative report in the first 5 paragraphs.	Good Opens with introduction of a relevant and timely topic, including Who, What, Where, and When. In investigative report, includes the Why and the How in the first 5 paragraphs.
Builds content 40 pts Develops the news story with facts and details.	Poor Uses one strategy to develop content; sense of drama lacking.	Fair Uses some strategies to develop content and heighten sense of drama.	Good Uses significant numbers of strategy to develop content, such as, sequence and transitions; quotations; descriptive language/vocabulary (to enhance mental images of people and places); drama; sensory details.
Establishes a sense of closure 15 pts Wraps up story or investigation.	Poor Simply ends.	Fair Uses a summarization strategy.	Good Creates a satisfying ending by summarizing main points; if investigative report, ends with a global question that may suggest or encourage further exploration.
Conventions 25 pts Revises and edits news story to eliminate sentence, usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation errors.	Poor Contains more than 10 errors in several specified conventions like grammar, spelling; little if any attention given to sequence or organization.	Fair Contains more than 5 errors in more than one of the specified conventions like grammar, spelling; some problems with coherence.	Good The news story coheres; the paper is virtually error free with less than 5 errors.
