Topic	Excellent The topic of the paragraph is clearly conveyed. The paragraph stays on one topic and includes a variation of different types of sentences.	Good The reader gets a clear picture of what the topic of the paragraph is. The paragraph mostly stays on topic. May include a few different types of sentences.	Fair The topic may not be completely clear. The paragraph may mostly focus on the topic with a few sentences that are off topic.	Poor There is no topic presented in the paragraph. The reader does not get a clear picture of what the paragraph is about.
Support/Details	Excellent Topic is supported by 3-5 specific details.	Good Topic is supported by a 1-2 specific details.	Fair Topic is supported by general statements that may or may not relate to the topic.	Poor There is a slight/no attempt at support.
Verb Usage	Excellent All past, present, and future tense verbs in the paragraph are used in the correct forms.	Good Some of the past, present, and future tense verbs that are used in the paragraph are in the correct form.	Fair Only of the verbs used in the paragraph are in the correct form.	Poor None of the verbs in the paragraph are used correctly.
Format/Neatness	Excellent Writing is very neat. Paragraph is indented and is the requested length.	Good Writing is legible, well-formed characters, and clean. Paragraph is the requested length.	Fair Legible writing, some ill-formed letters, print too small or too large. Paragraph is under the requested length.	Poor Illegible writing. Does not follow acceptable formatting guidelines. Paragraph is under the requested length.
Spelling/Punctuation	Excellent Writing evidences understanding of proper use of punctuation throughout. No spelling errors throughout.	Good Writing contains one or two consistent incorrect uses of punctuation. Most words are spelled correctly (1-2 errors).	Fair Many sentences are characterized by incorrect uses of punctuation.
