	Advance - Level 4 (N/A)	Proficient- Level 3 (N/A)	Average - Level 2 (N/A)	Below Average- Level 1 (N/A)
Beginning, Middle & End	Advance - Level 4 The story has a creative, well-developed story that includes the beginning, middle and end. Proper sequencing is portrayed. Story flows well and contains smooth transitions.	Proficient- Level 3 The story has a beginning, middle and end. Follows proper sequencing. However, it lacks smooth transitions.	Average - Level 2 The story is missing one of the following elements: beginning, middle or end. Sequencing is out of order and makes the story confusing.	Below Average- Level 1 The beginning, middle and end have not been developed. The story does not follow the proper time lined events. Does not contain proper sequencing order.
Characters	Advance - Level 4 The characters in the story are described well and make sense in the story.	Proficient- Level 3 The characters in the story are described adequately and make sense most of the time.	Average - Level 2 The characters in the story are not described well and often don't make sense.	Below Average- Level 1 The characters in the story are described poorly. Their purpose within the story is unclear.
Setting	Advance - Level 4 The story's time and place are described creatively and completely.	Proficient- Level 3 The story's time and place are described completely.	Average - Level 2 The story's time or place are vaguely described.	Below Average- Level 1 The story's time and place have not been described.
Plot	Advance - Level 4 Plot is well developed. It captures the reader's attention and is enjoyable to read.	Proficient- Level 3 Plot lacks supportive details to give clarity and excitement to the story.	Average - Level 2 The story needs more details and information to clearly communicate the events that have taken place. Some facts have been left out and/or are unexplained.	Below Average- Level 1 The story lacks details and does not follow a story line. Information is unclear and confusing. Story lacks purpose and direction.
