Kindergarten Writing Rubric Formal Assessment of kindergarten writing samples.
	Emerging 1 pts	Satisfactory 2 pts	Exemplary 3 pts
Focus Discuss ideas to include in paper and write down thoughts	Emerging Student struggles to verbalize or put any thoughts on paper. Teacher does the majority of the prompting for ideas to include in paper.	Satisfactory Student verbalizes thoughts to include in paper. Attempts to write ideas down on paper.	Exemplary Student verbalizes multiple thoughts to include in paper. Student successfully puts ideas down in written form.
Types of Writing Write for a specific purpose or audience	Emerging Student writes completely off subject and disregards intended audience.	Satisfactory Student stays mainly on topic and writes mainly for the intended audience. Most of the words and/or sentences stay focused on the intended writing prompt.	Exemplary Student writes on topic and for the intended audience. The writing piece answers the writing prompt completely.
Organization Student uses pictures, letters, and words to write	Emerging Student expresses thoughts to teacher and the teacher writes the words or sentences.	Satisfactory Student attempts to use pictures, letters, and words on their own.	Exemplary Student appropriately uses pictures, letters, and words on their own.
Handwriting Student displays grade level appropriate handwriting skills	Emerging Student attempts, but struggles to correctly shape and space letters of the alphabet.	Satisfactory Student shapes and spaces letters of the alphabet correctly some of the time.	Exemplary Student shapes and spaces letters of the alphabet correctly most of the time.
Spelling Student spells grade level appropriate words	Emerging Student attempts, but struggles to spell sight words and cvc words.	Satisfactory Student writes sight words and cvc words correctly some of the time.	Exemplary Student writes sight words and cvc words correctly most of the time.
