Careful Involvement	Acceptable Somewhat better than perfunctory response; little or no reflection.	Better Typical level of response; observed some key issues and made brief comments. No hard thinking.	Best Better than average response, noting key issues and evaluating them. Good sense of personal engagement in relation to the class process and course requirements.	Extended Requirement Essentially same as "best" but with some added thought and activity required.
Mechanics	Acceptable Fair writing, but with errors.	Better Acceptable writing; reasonably clear, with few errors.	Best Solid, standard writing, easy to understand, communicates clearly and convincingly; with few or no errors in grammar, etc.	Extended Requirement Excellent writing in all ways, with creativity, notable clarity and imagination; provokes further thought and is enjoyable to read.
Comprehension	Acceptable Little evidence of research or reflection on basic resources.	Better Generally good research or evidence of appropriate reading	Best Solid, correct information and facts; evidence of historical perspective and sense of significance.
