Purpose and Originality
Level One
Poem appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas are impersonal or unoriginal.
Level Two
The poem is creative, but appears to be rushed.
Level Three
Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written.
Level Four
Poem is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions.
Form
This will not apply to free verse poems.
Level One
Poem is not written in the proper form. Rhythm and rhyme scheme are non-existent.
Level Two
Poem is somewhat written in the proper form. Rhythm and rhyme scheme are discernable, but not correct.
Level Three
Poem is mostly written in the proper form. Rhyme scheme is present, although the rhythm is slightly off.
Level Four
Poem is complete and follows its intended form.
Rhythm and rhyme scheme are exact.
Grammar
Level One
There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poem difficult to understand.
Level Two
The poet's intended meaning is muddled by several spelling or grammar errors.
Level Three
A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem.
Level Four
Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is employed consistently throughout the poem.
Attractiveness
Level One
The poem is distractingly messy or very poorly designed.
Level Two
The poem is acceptably attractive though it may be a bit messy.
Level Three
The poem is attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness.
Level Four
The poem is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness.
Concrete vs. Abstract Language
Level One
The poem uses no concrete language.
Level Two
The poem rarely incorporates any concrete language to make the emotion of the poem tangible.
Level Three
The poem uses concrete language a couple times, and it helps the reader understand the feeling being expressed.
Level Four
The poet consistently incorporates concrete language into the poem to help the reader feel the emotions being expressed.
Figurative language
Level One
The poem did not include any figurative language or literary devices, such as alliteration, assonance, and consonance.
Level Two
The poem uses figurative language or literary devices once.
Level Three
The poem incorprates two or more different types of figurative language or literary devices throughout the poem.
Level Four
The poem includes three or more types of figurative language and literary devices.
Peer Review
Level One
The poet provides no evidence of peer review.
Level Two
The poet provides evidence of one peer review session. Questions do not go beyond, "Is it good?", "Do you like it?", or "Fix my grammar errors."
Level Three
The poet provides evidence of two peer review sessions. Questions begin to address poetry techniques, such as rhythm, rhyme, and imagery.
Level Four
The poet provides evidence of three or more peer review sessions. Questions address poetry techniques, such as rhythm, rhyme, and imagery.
Revision
Level One
The poet provides no evidence of revision.
Level Two
Poet revises poem based solely on grammatical errors.
Level Three
Poet provides evidence of one or two revisions based on content, form, and poetic devices.
Level Four
Poet provides evidence of multiple revisions and a willingness to experiment with form, content, and poetic devices.
