Good 3-4 spelling, grammar or punctuation errors present.	Above Average 1-2 spelling, grammar or punctuation errors present.	Excellence There are no spelling, grammar or punctuation errors present.
Correct Format	Beginning The poem follows no apparent rhyme scheme and does not have the correct number of lines.	Fair Poem has a rhyme scheme but not the correct a a b b a pattern. Also, the number of lines is incorrect.	Good The poem has the correct number of lines but the rhyme scheme is not correct.	Above Average Poem contains the correct rhyme scheme but has too many or too few lines.	Excellence Poem contains 5 lines and is in an a a b b a pattern of rhyme.
Creativity	Beginning Poem seems to have no creative thematic elements and does not incorporate figurative language.	Fair Poem makes no use of figurative language but the creative thinking is apparent.	Good Poem shows an example of a type of figurative language and is borderline creative.	Above Average Poem shows 2 uses of figurative language and still shows creative thinking.	Excellence Poem contains 3 or more uses of figurative language and shows imagination.
Legibility	Beginning The poem is so illegible that it is hard for the teacher to discern the words.	Fair The writing is sloppy and there are several erase marks and scribbles.	Good Poem has a few words marked out or erased but the writing is still legible.	Above Average Poem contains a few erase marks but the writing is still legible.	Excellence The poem is neat and easy to read. It is free from eraser marks and scribbles.
