Characters' personality partially developed.	Exemplary Writer gives both internal and external descriptions of characters. Characters' personality fully developed; character seems human/rounded.
Plot Development	Beginning Writer offers little more than a sequence of events. Seemingly little attention paid to plot line.	Progressing Writer gives some background information. May hurry through conflict and action. Resolution seems lacking.	Exemplary Writer offers clear exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Descriptive Writing	Beginning Little evidence of descriptive writing. Descriptions may be surface level only with no sensory appeal.	Progressing Some evidence of descriptive writing. Descriptions occasionally use sensory imagery and create a rough idea in the reader's mind.	Exemplary Repeated and fluent use of descriptive writing. Descriptions almost always appeal to senses and gives the reader an accurate and clear mental image.
