A Model of Our Solar System
A Model of Our Solar System
Grade 4 is beginning a new science unit on Planets and Other Objects in Space. For our project, students will take their knowledge of our solar system and create a 3-dimensional model of it. The planets should be in the correct order and be relatively proportioned to each other (example: Mars should not be bigger than Jupiter). The sun should be included as part of the solar system. All planets should be clearly labeled in some way. This is a project meant to not only see how students view the solar system, but to also showcase their creativity. Students are encouraged to use color and to get creative while learning. This project is worth 30 points and is due March 21. Each student will have to present their project to the class, so they should come prepared to discuss how their 3-D solar system model was created and be able to discuss a little about each planet.

Planets are clearly labeled
Poor
No labels are present, very difficult to find, or difficult to read.
Good
Labels are present, but they may have been difficult to find or handwriting could have been improved.
Excellent
Labels are clearly present and are easy to read.
Total points
Creativity
Poor
Very little or no creativity. Minimal color is used.
Good
Some thought has been put into the project. There is some color and the planets are close to their correct color.
Excellent
There is large amounts of creativity being shown. All planets have their correct colors and imagination has been used when designing the solar system model.
Total points
Planets are in the correct order
Poor
Planets are not in the correct order or many are out of place.
Good
One or two planets are out of order.
Excellent
All planets are in the correct order.
Total points
Planets are proportioned correctly
Poor
Planets are not correctly proportioned.
Example: Mars should not be bigger than Jupiter.
Good
The proportions are close but there are a couple mistakes.
Excellent
All planets are correctly proportioned to each other.
Total points
All planets are found.
Poor
Two or more planets are missing.
Good
One planet is missing.
Excellent
All planets are accounted for.
