Vocabulary Assessment
Students will be able to match words and definitions, complete sentences with vocabulary words, write definitions for vocabulary words in student language, and write original sentences for selected vocabulary words that contain textual evidence proving the student's understanding of the word.

Student is able to write most (at least 75%) of the definitions. This means in the student's own words.
Excellent (above proficiency)
Student is able to write all of the definitions (100%). This is in the student's own words, not a dictionary definition.

Student is able to write a sentence for only a few words (below 50%).
Fair (below proficiency)
Student is able to write a sentence for some of the words (below 75%).
proficient (good)
Student is able to write a sentence for most of the words (at least 75%).
Excellent (above proficiency)
Student is able to write sentences for all of the words (100%). The sentences connect back to the Unit theme/essential question.
Mechanics
Poor (below proficiency)
Student often misspells, does not capitalize, does not use correct punctuation (only 50% or less of mechanics are correct)
Fair (below proficiency)
Student sometimes misspells (more than 75% of the time), does not capitalize, does not use correct punctuation (less than 75%).
proficient (good)
Student seldom misspells (25% or below), and capitalizes and punctuates correctly most of the time (at least 75%).
Excellent (above proficiency)
Student never misspells, capitalization and punctuation use is correct (100% accuracy).
