Exposition	Poor The reader has no idea where or when your story takes place, and/or your reader doesn't understand who your characters are.	Fair You've given the reader some sense of background	Good You've given your reader a solid sense of background.	Excellent You've painted a vivid picture of when and where your story takes place and who your characters are.
3D Main Character	Poor Your lead character doesn't at all seem like a real person.	Fair Your lead character sort of seems like a real person but lacks depth.	Good Your lead character seems like a real person and has some depth.	Excellent You're lead character seems like a real person and is clearly a complicated person.
Conflict	Poor Your story has either not enough conflict or way too much for a story this short. You might also have introduced your conflict too late - as an afterthought.	Fair You do an okay job of setting up conflict.	Good You do a good job of establishing conflict.	Excellent You have a clear, believable conflict that you establish early on.
Climax	Poor Your story has no clear climax.	Fair Your story has something resembling a climax.	Good Your story has a relatively good climax.	Excellent Your story has a clear, dramatic climax that is obviously the highest point of action in the story.
Resolution	Poor Your story leaves the reader with a sense that things are unfinished.	Fair Your story leaves the reader with quite a few questions. Mechanics	Poor Your story has so many errors (or so many severe errors) that it is impossible to read.	Fair Your story has too many errors.	Good Your story has only a few errors.	Excellent Your story has clearly been proofread by you and/or others and is remarkably free of errors.
