High School PE - Soccer Skills Assessment
Students will be assessed on their overall skill level and ability to carry out the following skills learned and practiced in class: kicking/shooting, dribbling, passing, heading, trapping, and overall gameplay participation and understanding of position responsibilities.

Dribbling the ball
Minimal
Student uses toes to kick the ball in front of them and does not go in a straight line. The student is constantly chasing after the ball. Has to always look at the ball while dribbling.
Partial
Student uses only one foot to kick the ball forward and chases after the ball. Student sometimes runs over the ball. Sometimes the head is up looking around while dribbling.
Acceptable
Student kicks the ball within 1 yard ahead of them with each pass. They use both feet and only the inside or outside of their foot. The student can accelerate and stop and without losing control. Student occasionally looks at the ball while dribbling.
Thorough/Advanced
Student kicks the ball within 1 yard ahead of them with each pass. They use both feet and uses both the inside and outside of their feet. The student can accelerate, stop and turn, without losing control. Student rarely looks at the ball while dribbling.
Passing
Minimal
Student passes the ball with their toes and "pushes" the ball rather than kicks the ball. The ball goes nowhere near the target. The ball bounces for most of the pass.
Partial
Student passes the ball with their toes and "pushes" the ball rather than kicks the ball. The ball goes toward the target but is off by a few feet. The ball bounces for most of the pass. Body faces target most of the time.
Acceptable
Student passes the ball within a foot to their partner. Student sometimes uses the inside of their foot. Ball bounces on the ground through some of the pass. Hips are square to target.
Thorough/Advanced
Student passes the ball right on target (making it so that the partner does not have to move or hits them in stride). Student uses the inside of their foot. Ball does not leave the ground. Hips are square to target.
Shooting to a set target
Minimal
Student shots successfully to set target
less than 3 attempts.
Student is using toes to kick the ball when approached.
Partial
Student shots successfully to set target
3 out of 5 attempts.
Student is using toes the majority of the time; attempts to use side and/or top of foot.
Acceptable
Student shots successfully to set target 4 out of 5 attempts.
Student consistently attempts to use side and/or top of foot when striking the ball.
Thorough/Advanced
Student shots successfully to set target 5 out of 5 attempts. Student consistently uses side and /or top of foot when striking the ball.
Trapping the ball
Minimal
Does not attempt to trap the ball, no contact or lacks a soft contact causing the ball to bounce away preventing control.
Partial
Needs to improve the contact by moving slightly away to prevent the ball from rebounding away from the body.
Acceptable
Absorb the ball and soften the contact by moving slightly away on contact. Keeps the ball close, within one foot after trap.
Thorough/Advanced
Prior knowledge and experience gives student an advantage.
Traps occur fast and without much effort.
Heading the ball
Minimal
Student does not prepare for the header by getting into an athletic stance. Student lets ball hit top of head with no attempt to direct the ball.
Partial
Student attempts to brace for impact on the head. Student is able to go get the ball as instructed. However, contact is made with the top of the head and attempted directionality is not successful.
Acceptable
Student prepared to go get the ball by being in athletic stance. Extends body toward the ball in attempt to go get it. Contacts ball with forehead with attempted directionality.
Thorough/Advanced
Student displays prior knowledge/perceived practice in the skill. Is able to go get the ball with forehead and accurately direct the ball in desired direction.
Game play
Minimal
Student participation in regulation games is low. Understanding and carrying out of position responsibilities is not displayed.
Partial
Student participation in regulation games is only attempted when prompted. Understanding and carrying out of position responsibilities is seldom displayed.
Acceptable
Student makes concerted efforts to participate, whether the ball is near them or not. Position responsibilities are displayed the majority of the time.
Thorough/Advanced
Student displays prior knowledge/perceived practice in game play efforts and tactics. Understands and carries out position responsibilities in a strategic way.
