The student's analysis reflects an average understanding of the essay prompt and literary work. All requirements are met, reflecting a basic understanding of the text as well as the assignment.

The student's analysis does not reflect a basic understanding of the essay prompt and literary work. Problem areas could be in the understanding of the text and/or the assignment. One or two requirements are either left out or completely lacking in an understanding of the text and/or assignment.

The student's analysis and understanding of the text is lacking in many or all areas of the text and/or assignment. Many requirements are missing or lacking in understanding. Overall, the analysis may reflect a lack of effort or understanding in all areas.

All aspects of the assignment show a sophisticated word choice. Word choice is precise with effective use of transitions. Sentence structure is varied. Word choice and sentence structure help add to the sophistication and depth of the analysis.

All aspects of the assignment show a basic and appropriate word choice. Word choice is precise and most transitions are used effectively. Most sentences are varied, with no awkward sentences that get in the way of clarity and meaning of writing.

At several points in the project, some aspects show appropriate word choice, but some parts reveal a limited choice of words. Word choice is not always appropriate, and some transitions are not used correctly or more are needed. Sentence structure shows some variation but are limited in structure. There is evidence of confusing sentences that do not immediately convey writer's meaning.
