Structure/Organization 25 pts	Poor Does not have introduction, body paragraph and conclusion. There is no thesis statement. Body paragraphs are not clear.	Fair Has and introduction and a conclusion. Includes body paragraphs. Thesis statement is stated, but not clear.	Good Has a clear introduction, conclusion and at least three body paragraphs. Introduction has thesis statement. Paragraphs have topic sentences. Conclusion summarizes the point of the essay.
Argument/Thesis 25 pts	Poor Writer's stance on the argument is not clear. Argument is simple and not explained.	Fair Writer states argument. Argument is somewhat developed.	Good Writer clearly states his or her position. Writer's argument is thoughtful, complex and thoroughly explained.
Textual Evidence/Sources 25 pts	Poor Evidence is not specific. Writer does not include at least 2 sources. Evidence is simple and not fully explored. Evidence does not support the writer's argument/thesis.	Fair Includes at 2 outside sources. Two textual references to back up thesis, but they are not thoroughly explained or examined. Evidence is not specific and/or does not support the writer's argument/thesis statement.	Good Includes at least 2 textual references to back up thesis. This evidence is specific, complex and thoroughly examined. Evidence is quoted or paraphrased and clearly supports the writer's argument.
Mechanics 25 pts	Poor The paper has not been edited. There are numerous spelling, punctuation errors, and sentence structure problems. More than 3 MLA errors. No works cited!	Fair There are few spelling errors. Student uses mostly proper grammar, including correct punctuation and sentence structure in most cases. Little to none MLA errors.	Good Uses correct grammar, including spelling, punctuation and sentence structure. Sentences are complete. Student uses capitalization where needed. Work has clearly been edited. Work cited included!
