English/Language Arts: Content Standards 
This course develops Content Standards in the area of English/Language Arts. These are broad statements of what students will know and be able to do as a result of their training at the Alaska Military Youth Academy. In reading, students will use a variety of strategies to construct meaning from texts. They will: 1) decode/comprehend literal and inferred meanings; 2) summarize and connect information across themes/genres; 3) demonstrate an understanding of main ideas/supporting details; 4) analyze literary elements and devices 5) differentiate fact from opinion; 6)make personal connections to texts and the experiences of others. The Six Traits of effective writing will be emphasized: ideas, voice, organization, word choice, conventions, and fluency. Students will utilize the writing process: brainstroming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. They will develop the skills to write a five-paragraph essay.
