Early Writing Rubric
	Secure 3 pts	Developing 2 pts	Beginning 1 pts
Use of Illustrations	Secure - Picture with 3 or more details - Letters or words match picture - Purpose of picture is to enhance story	Developing - Picture with a few details - Letters or words present - Purpose of picture is to tell story equally with words/letters	Beginning - Picture is difficult to recognize, no details - No letters or words - Purpose of picture is to tell story
Phonetics	Secure - Letters correspond to phonetic spellings - Stretches sounds to spell unknown words - Sight words spelled correctly	Developing - Real letters, but do not always match sounds - Asks for help to spell unknown words - Some sight words are present and spelled correctly	Beginning - Lines, circles or letter-like forms - Copies names, environmental writing or memorized words (ex: mom, zoo) - No sight words
Handwriting	Secure - Mature pencil grip - Endurance to write three lines or more - Differentiates sizes of letters based on placement on the lines - Forms letters correctly	Developing - Mature pencil grip - Limited endurance - Differentiates sizes of upper/lowercase letters - Forms most letters correctly, with a few reversals	Beginning - Immature pencil grip - Limited endurance - Does not differentiate letter sizes - Letter-like forms are used instead of real letters
