Thesis

Needs Improvement: 1-2

Thesis does not exist or is split into many different statements that are not grouped under one opinion or idea.

--Recommendation--
Author should create a list of similarities between the texts and use one similarity as a thesis statement.
Good: 3-4

Thesis is a simple, but clear.

The thesis is not broken down into smaller parts, but it focusses the reader to one specific idea that link the texts.
Very Good: 5-6

Thesis is complex and clear.

It is broken down into two or three parts that are unified under one idea or concept.
Evidence

Needs Improvement: 1-2

The author uses either none or less than five specific examples from the text to show their thesis.

The author mostly summarizes the texts.

--Recommendation--
Author should make a list of examples or sentences from each text that only relate to the similarity they chose to write about.
Good: 3-4

The author uses more than five examples, but uses an unequal number of examples to prove each point in a confusing way.

Some examples are unnecessary/some summary of the texts.
Very Good: 5-6

The author uses many examples to equally support each statement.

No unnecessary examples - the author clearly uses examples to support the thesis only.
Organization

Needs Improvement: 1-2

The response is one big paragraph or is randomly split up into separate paragraphs that make reading confusing.

No transitions or topic sentences used for paragraphs.

--Recommendation-
Author should make one paragraph for each example from their list. Use the T-E-E method to write short, 3-sentence paragraphs about how each example shows the similarity.
Good: 3-4

The response is split up into paragraphs for each text, introduction, and conclusion.

There are topic sentences for paragraphs but may lack transition sentences.

Some paragraphs relate directly to the thesis, but some do not.
Very Good: 5-6

The response is split based on the different parts of the thesis statement.

Every paragraph has a topic sentence using a different part of the author’s thesis statement.

Each paragraph ends with a transition into the next paragraph.

Examples from both texts are used in all paragraphs.
Language

Needs Improvement: 1-2

Vocabulary is simple. The author does not use complex vocabulary from the article.

--Recommendation--
After you have written your response, re-read the parts of the texts where your examples came from. Circle one word from each example and try to put it into your response where you are talking about that example.
Good: 3-4

The author uses some vocabulary from the article, but in very similar ways to how the authors of the texts use it.
Very Good: 5-6

The author uses vocabulary from the article in original ways, not copying phrases or sentences directly from the article.
Conventions

Needs Improvement: 1-2

There are many spelling and grammar mistakes which make reading the response confusing.

--Recommendation--
Author should consider typing their responses to minimize spelling errors.

--Recommendation--
After you have written your response, type it into the computer. If you typed it in the first place, then read it outloud to yourself twice.
Good: 3-4

There are some spelling or grammar mistakes, but it does not make reading the response confusing.
Very Good: 5-6

There are few or no spelling mistakes. Any grammar errors are not confusing and still make sense to the reader.
