8 Basic Colors

Identify, name, and recognize the words for the 8 basic colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, brown & black.

Red: Stop

The child does not know any or only a few basic colors.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child knows at least 6 of the 8 color names when shown a sample and can find the color when it is named.
Green: Ready to Go

The child knows all 8 basic colors by name, can identify each of them when shown a color sample, and can read at least 7 out of 8 of the color names.
Alphabet Letters

Know capital and lower case letters for all 26 letters of the alphabet.

Red: Stop

The child is just starting to learn the alphabet or has less than an 80% mastery level.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child demonstrates that he/she knows at least 80% (21) of the alphabet letters (capital and lower case) by sight.
Green: Ready to Go

The child demonstrates that he/she knows all of the alphabet letters (capital and lower case) by sight.
Letter Sounds

Match phonic sound to letter and match pictures to beginning sounds.

Red: Stop

The child can produce the phonetic sound a letter makes and match pictures to their beginning sound for less than 21 letters or is just learning.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child can produce the phonetic sound a letter makes and match pictures to their beginning sound.
Green: Ready to Go

The child can produce the phonetic sound a letter makes, match pictures to their beginning sound, and give their own word that begins with that alphabetic sound.
Recite ABC's

Can say by rote

Red: Stop

The child is just learning or can say the alphabet by rote with several errors.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child can say the alphabet by rote with only one error.
Green: Ready to Go

The child can say the alphabet by rote without any errors.
Math
Positional Words

Can follow directions

Red: Stop

The child understands none or only some of the directional words and/or cannot use them to follow directions.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child demonstrates an understanding of most words such as up, down, between, top, and bottom and is able to follow directions.
Green: Ready to Go

The child demonstrates an understanding of words such as up, down, between, top, and bottom which enable him/her to follow directions.
Patterns

Identify the following patterns: AB, AAB and ABB

Red: Stop

The child is making progress in recognizing patterns but is unable to produce their own.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child is able to recognize, copy and produce only the AB pattern.
Green: Ready to Go

The child is able to recognize, copy and produce all three patterns.
Counting/Number Recognition

Can rote count to 100

Red: Stop

The child is unable to rote count up to 20 or identify number symbols.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child is able to rote count to 20 and name the number when shown the digit symbol.
Green: Ready to Go

The child can rote count to 100 and recognize and name the number when shown the digit symbol.

Fine Motor Skills

writing, coloring and cutting

Red: Stop

The child is just learning or unable to write, color, or cut within the lines.
Yellow: Use Caution

The child can write with a pencil, color and stay within the lines, and cut basic picture shapes.
Green: Ready to Go

The child has good to excellent control when using a pencil to write on lines, when using a crayon to color small areas and stay within the lines and when using scissors to cut out pictures using turns, corners, and cutting along lines.
