Serve

Long and Short

EXEMPLARY

Non-dominant shoulder points towards target. Contact is made below the waist.
Shuttle is DROPPED and contact is made in front of body, weight is transferred from back to front foot as contact is made, shuttle lands close to the net and behind the short service line. Long serve is high and deep.
PROFICIENT

Non-dominant shoulder points towards target, contact is made below the waist. Shuttle is dropped. Contact is made in front of body, weight is transferred from back to front foot on contact. Shuttle lands high, but behind the short service line. Long serve lands too short or is hit too low.
DEVELOPING

Non-dominant shoulder points toward target, contact is made below the waist. Shuttle is tossed, swing is too fast at contact spot
BEGINNING

Non-dominant shoulder is not pointed towards target, contact is made above the waist, shuttle is tossed or swing is too fast at contact. Contact is made in front of body, shuttle lands in front of the short service line or doesn't make it over the net.
Clear

Over and Underhand

EXEMPLARY

Contact is made high with a straight elbow in front of body, weight is shifted to front foot as contact is made, racket face is slightly open, follow through is across the body, shuttle lands high and deep inbounds.
PROFICIENT

Contact is made near head level in front of body, racket face is slightly open, follow through is across the body, shuttle lands high and deep.
DEVELOPING

Contact is made near head level, over the head. Racket face is open, but follow through stops at contact. Shuttle lands high but not deep.
BEGINNING

Contact is made near head level and behind the body, racket face is open to ceiling, follow through stops at contact, shuttle rarely makes it over the net.
Drop

EXEMPLARY

Mechanics look like the overhead clear, contact is made above the head or close to it, gentle "push" of the shuttle lands it close to the net and in front of the short service line, gentle follow through
PROFICIENT

Mechanics look like the overhead clear, contact is made close to the head or above it, hard "push" of the shuttle lands it over the net and in front of the short service line, gentle follow through.
DEVELOPING

Mechanics of overhead clear are evident, contact is made close to head, racket speed is too fast for a "push" over the net therefore shuttle travels too far into opponents court.
BEGINNING

Mechanics are not similar to the clear, contact is made at head level, hard "push" of the shuttle over the net lands it well behind the short service line, follow through stops at contact.
Smash

EXEMPLARY

Smash is taken no further than 3/4 court, mechanics look like the overhead clear, contact is made above the head, in front of the body, with straight elbow. Racket face is pointed downward, follow through is downward across the body, shuttle lands inbounds and is unable to be returned.
PROFICIENT

Smash is taken from every area of the court, mechanics look like the overhead clear, contact is made without a straight elbow, racket face is pointed downward, follow through is downward across the body, shuttle land inbounds, but may be returnable.
DEVELOPING

Smash is taken from every area on the court, mechanics are not like the clear, contact in made near the head, racket face is somewhat pointing downward. Follow through stops at contact, shuttle may not land inbounds or make it over the net.
BEGINNING

Recognized the opportunity to smash too late to get ready.
Drive

EXEMPLARY

Drive is contacted around head height, in front of body. The power of the shot makes it difficult to return. The drive is directed towards opponents chest.
PROFICIENT

Drive is contacted around head height, in front of body. The power of the shot allows for a return. The drive is directed towards opponent.
DEVELOPING

Drive is contacted lower than head level. and may not make it over the net.
BEGINNING

Little recognition of opportunity to perform a drive shot.
