Level 4

The student is able to identify the main author's purpose in a clear and concise way. The student is able to justify their answer with the two best examples from the text when asked. The student is able to use the proper terminology when asked to write for the three main purposes.

Level 3

The student is able to identify the main author's purpose. The student is able two examples to justify their answer, though one may not be the strongest. The students is able to mostly use the correct terms or phrases when asked to write for the three main purposes.

Level 2

The student is able to state the main author's purpose, but not clearly. Terms are found to justify their answer, but they are vague and do not always contribute. The student has problems utilizing correct terms when writing for the three main purposes.

Level 1

The student is able to state an idea, but it is not the main author's purpose. Justification of terms and properly utilizing phrases when writing is simply lacking or not apparent.
