Concrete Details 3 pts Facts, specifics, examples, descriptions, illustrations, support, proof, evidence, quotations, or paraphasing	Beginning I'm not quiet sure how to do this. I include some details but I'm really not sure what concrete details are.	Developing I have some concrete details in my responses though they are not key details. I have some understanding of what concrete details are but I get confused sometimes.	Proficient I have included a number of key concrete details from the reading. I have a firm grasp of how to identify concrete details and include them in my responses.
"Can You" - Effort 3 pts Opinions, insight, analysis, interpretation, inference, personal response, feelings, evaluation, explication, and reflection	Beginning I'm not quiet sure how to do this. I don't really state an opinion or if I do, I'm still not sure what effort is and whether or not I've included it in my writing.	Developing I have some commentary in my responses. I may still use words like "I," "me," or "my." My effort comments on my details.	Proficient I have a firm grasp of what effort is and how to include it in a response. My effort shows a high degree of critical analysis.
Understanding 3 pts The smallest unit of thought in a reading response. It consists of one sentence of concrete detail followed by two sentences of commentary.	Beginning I don't know how to do this yet. I don't really understand what it is or how to write about it.	Developing I have some idea of what a understanding is. I have tried to write one or even two details in my responses. I'm still not sure how to link them together to make a well-crafted description.	Proficient I am full capable of writing about my understanding. I can link ideas together with transition words and I include a topic sentence and two or more concrete details in my writing.
