Critical Thinking	Poor The student's responses do not demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student does not demonstrate knowledge of basic story elements.	Fair The student's responses demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student response has one idea present. Student is able to identify characters.	Good The student's responses demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student has at least 2 ideas present. Clearly identifies main characters, and problem/solution.	Excellent The student's responses demonstrate superior critical thought about the text. Student response has all ideas present. Clearly identifies major and minor characters, problem/solution.
Use of Examples	Poor Student response does not have any examples to support their ideas.	Fair Student response has at least one example to support the idea stated.	Good Student has at two examples to support the idea stated.	Excellent Student response has several examples which support the ideas stated.
Language and Conventions	Poor Sentence structure and vocabulary is basic/or incomplete. Inappropriate use of capitalization, spelling and punctuation. Paragraph format is missing.	Fair Sentence structure and vocabulary is developing. An attempt was made at appropriate use of punctuation, spelling and capitalization. May attempt to use paragraph format.	Good Sentence structure and vocabulary is evident. Overall appropriate use of punctuation, spelling and capitalization is demonstrated. Evidence of paragraphs is present. Organization	Poor Writing is sloppy,unreadable, not much thought put into it.	Fair Writing is somewhat sloppy, no evidence of planning.	Good Writing is presentable, present and planned.	Excellent Overall appearance is excellent. It is thought out and well planned.
