Thesis Statement
	Exceeds 3 pts	Meets 2 pts	Emerging 1 pts
Specificity	Exceeds Clearly identifies a single topic, focus, and position. The topic is narrow enough to be thoroughly addressed within the confines of the assignment.	Meets Topic is too broad to be addressed sufficiently within the confines of the assignment; may refer to multiple topics or problems, or may be unclear.	Emerging Topic and/or position is vague or unclear.
Stance	Exceeds Statement clearly and convincingly reflects the writer's position on one topic and focus. The position is supportable and original.	Meets Statement reflects the writer's position on the topic, but may be inadequate or unclear and vague.	Emerging Statement lacks a position or stance, or may be unsupportable.
Significance	Exceeds Thesis topic is relevant and important. It addresses a question or problem that requires resolution or that opens up a new perspective.	Meets The thesis statement may have some importance or relevance to the readings, but lacks focus and/or an original, supportable position or perspective.	Emerging Thesis statement has no real relevance to readings or subject. Reader may respond with, "So What?"
Structure	Exceeds The statement is a well constructed, grammatically correct sentence; and the structure reflects the thesis purpose.	Meets The statement is poorly constructed and/or contains one or two grammatical errors.	Emerging The statement contains more than two grammatical errors and/or is so poorly constructed that meaning is lost.
