Originality	Poor Writing does not show any orginality or voice.	Fair Writing sounds generic but may include some voice.	Good Writing shows some voice and originality.	Excellent Writing was original and shows voice.
Message of Essay	Poor Essay does not reflect the theme and barely mentions theme or being an American.	Fair Essay, reflects the theme, however does not leave the reader with a clear message.	Good Essay adequately reflects the theme but does not leave the reader with a clear and vivid imagery. Essay answered the mechanics of the theme, but left the reader wanting morel.	Excellent Essay paints a clear and vivid imagery of the idea of why he/she is proud to be an American. Writer uses specific examples to strengthen their message.
Length Requirement	Poor Writer was under the 200 word mark by 27 words or more.	Fair Writer was under the 200 word mark by 26 words or more.	Good Writer was close to the target of 200 words but was over or under the required amount by 25 words or more.	Excellent Writer stayed on target writing around 200 words.
