Identifies notes on a staff	Poor Student is unable to read notes on a staff	Fair Student occasionally reads notes on a staff	Good Student reads notes on a staff	Excels Student reads notes on a staff and is able to help other students read and understand note placement
Identifies notes on a keyboard	Poor Student is unable to identify notes on a keyboard	Fair Student occasionally identifies notes on a keyboard	Good Student identifies notes on a keyboard	Excels Student identifies notes and is able to compose simple melodies
Ability to read notes independently	Poor Student requires a display card to read/identify notes on a keyboard or staff	Fair Student occasionally requires a display card to read/identify notes on a keyboard or staff	Good Student does not require a display card to read/identify notes on a keyboard or staff	Excels Student does not require display card for note recoqnition and can place correct note on staff when asked
Reads notes in treble and bass clef	Poor Student has difficulty reading most notes in treble and bass clef	Fair Student occasionally has trouble reading notes in treble and bass clef	Good Student does not have trouble reading notes in either treble or bass clef	Excels Student can both read and write notes in the treble and bass clef
